Semih Rüstem Business Center

The Business Center takes its name from two buildings located on the project site: two villas built on two adjacent plots in the early 1930s. The buildings were designed by architect Semih Rüstem Temel.

In the 1930s, Adana was expanding northward from its historic center and marketplace along the Seyhan River toward the train station. Station Street formed the backbone of this development, with the homes of important families of the period and some public buildings located on this street. The two houses designed by architect Semih Rüstem and the Halkevi building designed by Seyfi Arkan, located slightly further south, were also built on this street. Station Street and its surroundings, later renamed Atatürk Street, served as a showcase reflecting the modern Adana lifestyle of the time and the architectural manifestations of Early Republican modernism in Adana. After the 1960s, this landscape would change, with most of the buildings from the 1930s and earlier being demolished, and multi-story construction becoming widespread.

The project aims to restore two villas registered as cultural assets and integrate them into a single composition by constructing a new complex on the large plot behind them. At the rear, the new two- and multi-story buildings, which emphasize transparency, serve as a backdrop to the small-scale villas at the front. The glass surfaces are protected by vertical grilles in one of the high blocks and horizontal sunshades in the other. A shaded courtyard space is located between the four buildings. Small transparent pavilions resembling winter gardens open onto this courtyard at the base of the high blocks, creating scale transitions between the low and high volumes.
